Red 25 de Abril suspension bridge & Christ The King Statue

Taken from the private balcony of our cabin aboard the P&O Ventura as we slowly pulled away from Lisbon at the end of the day, this photograph captures one of the city's most iconic views. Dominating the right-hand side of the image is the striking red 25 de Abril suspension bridge, its elegant steel towers and countless suspension cables stretching gracefully across the River Tagus before disappearing beyond the edge of the frame. To the left, standing proudly on the opposite hillside, is the impressive Christ the King (Cristo Rei) monument, its outstretched arms overlooking Lisbon from its tall concrete pedestal. The green hills beneath the statue are broken by pale limestone cliffs that tumble down towards the calm water, while a small sailing yacht drifts quietly beneath the bridge, emphasising the immense scale of the engineering above. Overhead, a dramatic sky filled with thick grey clouds is broken by patches of brilliant blue, allowing shafts of soft evening light to illuminate parts of the landscape. The still water reflects the muted colours of the sky, creating a peaceful atmosphere as the Ventura begins its journey away from port. It was a wonderful moment to photograph from the comfort of our balcony cabin, offering a unique perspective that few viewpoints ashore could match.

One of the great joys of cruising is that sometimes the best photographs are taken without ever leaving the ship. This image was captured from the balcony of our cabin aboard the P&O Ventura (June 2026) as we gently pulled away from Lisbon at the end of the day. Watching the magnificent 25 de Abril Bridge slide past, with the iconic Christ the King statue standing watch over the city beneath a dramatic evening sky, made for an unforgettable farewell to Portugal’s capital. It really was one of those moments where the balcony became the perfect photography platform.
